No Other Name, Part 6: Whitecross

Names are powerful and important.  God allowed Adam to name all the creatures that He Himself had made (Genesis 2:19-20).  There is no other name except that of Jesus by which we can be saved (Acts 4:11-12).  In fact, at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow (Philippians 2:9-11).  In this series of posts, we will look at the names of Classic Christian Rock bands and what those names have to say about God. Whitecross is another of the foundational bands of Christian hard rock and metal, and with a new single featuring a guest vocalist released earlier this year, it is clear that they are as fierce and heavy as ever.  Their powerful mix of bluesy rock would have sound great in the '80s and indeed sounds fantastic here in the 21st century. Although crosses used as jewelry are made of many things these days, one thing a Roman cross was not was white.  It started off as rough wood, and by the time it had done its job of painfully ending a human life, it was covered in blood.  The band name Whitecross may seem like an oxymoron, but in fact it points to amazing quality about the blood of the most famous victim of crucifixion in all of history. In 1 John 1:7 we read that "the blood of Jesus...cleanses us from all sin."  As a stain in fabric, blood is one of the most difficult to remove, yet the blood of Jesus, God in the flesh, is in fact a cleansing agent.  It washes away our sin.  And in Revelation 7:14 we read about people who "have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."

Whether your banging your head to an old classic from Whitecross or listening to their new material, let their name remind you of the power of the blood of Christ.  Whom do you know who needs to be washed in that crimson flow?
